REVIEW SUMMARY

Aladdin, Disney’s latest live action remake, will ultimately have you wishing for a little more magic! There’s nothing particularly wrong with this film per se (other than there is no real reason it needed to be adapted in the first place), but there’s nothing really enchanting about it either. Sure most scenes are full of lively energy, and the musical moments are no doubt nostalgic crowd pleasers, but it never comes close to holding a candle to the magic of the 1992 animated gem. At least Massoud and Scott are enjoyable as Aladdin and Jasmine, each bringing their respective character’s lovable essence to life with ease. However, Will Smith's rendition of the big blue Genie is another matter all together. I mean, he’s not terrible in the role, but is frustratingly “plain” in comparison to Robin William’s triumph of a voice performance in the original. Smith doesn’t nearly do enough to make the character his own, and that’s a shame, as there are definitely hints of what it could have been had he gone “full Will Smith” with it. In the end though, it’s perhaps the visuals that are the biggest treat you’ll get from the movie. The costumes, makeup, and set design are all exquisitely top notch, making for a visually pleasing viewing experience from start to finish. Now if only the other aspects of the film went that extra mile...
