REVIEW SUMMARY

If you’re looking for a little excitement on screen these days, good news - Extraction’s beautifully brutal action is more than enough to overcome the lackluster story at hand. It probably helps that the man in charge, Sam Hargrave, is the stuntman turned director who worked for the Russo brothers on their many Marvel films. Hargrave brings about kinetic and ferocious action sequences at nearly every turn here, making for some genuine heart pumping thrills. Then there’s the film’s star, Chris Hemsworth, who no doubt commands the audience’s attention whenever he’s on screen. Hemsworth is effortlessly likeable, believable and badass in the role of “mercenary with a heart of gold.” Unfortunately however, the plot is a rather been-there-done-that dud. There’s no real depth to it, as it’s all very unoriginal. And sure, a stripped down / no-frills / gimmick-free film can sometimes be refreshing, but here it just leaves you with the sense that something is missing. A little more bang in the plot department would surely have made this actioner even more of a blast. Luckily, there’s still enough explosive fun to be had.
