REVIEW SUMMARY

Same game. New adventure. Similar fun. That is what the newest instalment in the Jumanji franchise mainly boils down to. And frankly, that’s not a bad thing, as the filmmakers have managed to retain a decent amount of the wondrous entertainment elements the 2017 sleeper hit sequel/reboot provided us. Admittedly though, the fun little surprise components of the latter film are all but gone here, with some (ok, maybe a lot) of re-hashing going on in the script department. Luckily, there are a hand full of rather novel little spins thrown into the mix that help make it feel somewhat fresh. But like before, it is ultimately the cast’s impeccable chemistry and delivery that make it all work in the end. Seriously, the Rock and Kevin Hart can not - not be funny together, Karen Gillan remains impressively spirited throughout, Awkwafina makes for more than an amusing addition to the bunch, and Jack Black is a scene stealer just about every time he opens his mouth. So yes, while there is a fair bit of cinematic recycling going on, Jumanji: The Next Level proves there is definitely some play left in the franchise yet.
