SYNOPSIS

It is based on the short film of the same name created and uploaded to YouTube in 2010

Marcel is an adorable, 1-inch-tall shell who ekes out a colorful existence with his grandmother, Connie, and their pet lint, Alan. Once part of a sprawling community of shells, they now live alone as the sole survivors of a mysterious tragedy. However, when a documentary filmmaker discovers them, the short film he posts online brings Marcel millions of passionate fans.

REVIEW SUMMARY

The most adorably sweet movie you’ll see all year is about a 1-inch shell wearing sneakers. No, seriously. Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is a movie that should not work based on the silly premise alone. Yet, here we are with a poignantly heartfelt bit of cinema that literally everyone can enjoy. This is a film with real themes and life lessons that deals with world-wide connectedness. Oh, and it’s cute. Did I mention it’s cute? The voice work alone by Jenny Slate is phenomenally wee and delightfully meek. The faux documentary aspect is also a really creative touch. It also adds a nice layer of “meta-ness” to the whole proceedings, exploring how we receive this character. And at just under 90 minutes, it never overstays its welcome. Add in some well-known cameos and genuine laugh out loud moments, and it’s clear that Marcel will steal your heart. And if it doesn’t, well, you might just wanna check that you have one.
