SYNOPSIS

The crew of a spaceship headed to Mars discovers an accidental stowaway shortly after takeoff. Too far from Earth to turn back and with resources quickly dwindling, the ship's medical researcher emerges as the only dissenting voice against the group consensus that has already decided in favor of a grim outcome.

REVIEW SUMMARY

Joe Penna’s Stowaway is a tedious space drama with few fits of serviceable suspense. The good news is that the cast at hand is more than effective, each giving way to a heartfelt performance. Of the bunch, however, the biggest revelation is Anna Kendrick, who truly wows with a nuanced turn full of internal complexity. She really is the heart of the film, once again proving to be more than cutesy comedic relief. On the story front, the plot is no doubt an interesting one. Yes, there are plenty of curious developments along Stowaway’s 2-hour runtime, but it unfortunately never reaches maximum intrigue. Is any of it plausible, though? I suppose. At least the presentation seems authentic enough. In fact, if you’ve seen a space drama before, this will all feel very familiar. It’s a paint-by-numbers narrative more times than not, one that sadly culminates on a bit of a whimper. But, for all its familiarity, Stowaway does succeed at providing a strong emotional connection. And hey, that’s an interstellar feat in and of itself!
