REVIEW SUMMARY

Anthony and Joe Russo’s The Gray Man can perhaps best be described as a slickly stylish retread. Yep, it’s a great looking movie with great looking people in great looking action sequences. The problem - we’ve seen it all before. It’s part James Bond, part John Wick, part Jason Borne, but not nearly as good as any of those. Don’t get me wrong, it’s entirely enjoyable. In fact, there is plenty of high octane and globe-trotting excitement to be found. It just never feels like “its own thing,” rather a bunch of action movie leftovers. However, I did quite enjoy the actors involved. Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans were clearly having an insane amount of fun here. Evans in particular was a blast to watch, with his cocky quips and “trash stache” look making for some legitimate bad guy gold! On the other hand, Ana de Amas and Rege-Jean Page had their talents more than little wasted, with the latter barely registering 5 minutes of screen time. Luckily, our directors injected some neat, stylized camera shots into the mix, giving the viewing experience plenty of panache. If only things were a little more impressive in the plot department!
