Oddly enough, this version of the Nutcracker doesn’t feel very “Nutcracker-y," and falls more in line with something a kin to Narnia. That wouldn't be a bad thing, except the impressively magical visuals here are no match for the emotionally empty story. The plot we do get is unnecessarily befuddled at times and is perhaps too ambitious. If you remember, Disney had the same problem with A Wrinkle In Time earlier this year. And while SOME of the classic Nutcracker ballet music can be heard, it could have used more. Then again, another recognizable dance number probably wouldn’t be enough to completely save this one.
