REVIEW SUMMARY

When it comes to The Outfit, the well-tailored plot and skilled performances make for an extra pleasing fit. Yes, it’s all expertly put together, while also being overly simplistic in its approach. The setting is limited, yet wholly effective. The story is simple, yet full of intrigue. And the cast is small, yet oh so captivating. It’s almost as if this was taken from the pages of a stage play (it’s not, I checked). And while that’s not a bad thing by any means, you probably shouldn’t be expecting the commonplace gritty action found in other mob films. Nope, this one goes old school, and not just because it takes place in 1950’s Chicago. There is an emphasis on dialogue over action, as monologues are a plenty and gunfire contained to a minimum. But, that just makes the violence more effective when it does occur. Admittedly, all the talking makes for a few moments that teeter on “sleepy time.” But, what makes everything work as well as it does, are the actors involved. Mark Rylance, who appears in every scene of this thing, is a true master of the acting artform (it’s all in the eyes folks). One performance that will hopefully make Hollywood take notice comes courtesy of Dylan O’Brien. Trust me, the former teen heartthrob has matured into quite the skilled thespian. Well, at least he was in the role of this old-timey mobster. So, if it’s a twisty tale of deception you’re after, or an acting showcase you seek, The Outfit is a winning selection.
