REVIEW SUMMARY

The Outpost is a gripping tale of comradeship and chaos, making for another worthy entry in the war drama genre. The young cast really steps up to the platel here, giving believably raw performances all-round. Scott Eastwood and Caleb Landy Jones especially make the most of their meaty roles, no doubt boosting their acting cred with a couple of career bests. And while the film might lack some of the technical mastery seen in other recent war films (such as Sam Mende’s 1917), it never has trouble depicting the devastating nature of the complete and utter bedlam that occupies the movie’s second half. It’s an enthralling experience with plenty of “edge of your seat” moments thrown in for good measure. Admittedly however, things start on a rather sluggish note, with plenty of confusing “military jargon” and not so subtle foreshadowing. But, once the big true to life battle kicks off, it’s non-stop shock and awe until the credits the roll!
