In the Toronto of 2002, Meilin "Mei" Lee, a 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian student, is horrified to discover that whenever she gets too excited or stressed, she turns into a giant red panda; however, she can turn back if she becomes calm. Mei later learns that her ancestors have a shared history with the species as a family curse, though the curse can be contained by performing a special ritual on one specific night which happens to coincide with a concert by her favorite boy band 4*Town.

REVIEW SUMMARY

Pixar’s latest is yet another heart-warming affair full of emotionally intelligent themes and genuine laughs. And with a deep understanding of the Chinese experience in North America, it’s also deeply personal. Add in the throwback time period of 2002, and they’ve even got the nostalgia factor locked in. In short, it’s got a little of everything. The story’s cultural world building is also quite excellent, as this movie gives way to a wonderful diversity not seen very often in children’s fare. The Toronto, Ontario setting also makes for fresh change. It also makes a compelling argument to set more stories there (animated or otherwise). But don’t worry, all these distinct attributes don’t make it resonate any less with the general audience. In case you hadn’t figured it out from the adverts, the big red panda is very much a metaphor for puberty and all the confusing changes that come along at a certain age. And in true Pixar fashion, the allegory is effectively poignant. So yes, by the end of this movie your heart will definitely be full, and you’ll be seeing red for a whole other reason!
