REVIEW SUMMARY

The UglyDolls formula can pretty much be boiled down to (Toy Story + Trolls) – (all charm) x (a generic script). It’s not alllll bad though, as the starring “dolls” are no doubt cute, colourful and full of catchy songs. Truth be told, those animated musical numbers are not only well produced, but impeccably delivered by the songster-filled voice cast. Now if only the filmmakers put as much effort in the overly formulaic story as they did the soundtrack. Besides the poor script, the humour is lazy, characters forgettable, and message heavy handed. I mean, it's a great message and all about loving your imperfections, but it's delivered as subtly as a sledgehammer to the face. And to say the film "borrows" from other movies like Toy Story and Trolls, well, that would be a rather gross understatement. On the plus side, this will likely get you excited for Pixar's upcoming Toy Story 4 this Summer! As for UglyDolls, well, it's "to infinity and beyond... original."
