REVIEW SUMMARY
The Lovebirds is a predictable yet enjoyable bit of debauched comedy. So yes, while the story is forgettably unoriginal (think other “crime comedies” the likes of Game Night and Snatched), it remains funny throughout. The jokes, much like the dialogue, come at you fast and hard, landing (nearly) every time. This is all thanks to the talents of Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae, who are just plain fun to watch – especially together. Nanjiani does teeter on the “overly annoying mark” at times, but this is nothing close to his ultra-irritating work in Men In Black: International. As for Rae, she shines rather brightly here, making a case for more comedy roles in her future. However, the film does suffer from a lack of strong supporting characters, as there is really no one else to help with the laughs. The aforementioned uninspired plot is its main downfall though, as we get no real sense of “danger,” or any doubt how it will all turn out in the end. But, if you are looking to give your cheeks (and maybe a few abs) a workout, then this agreeable rom-com is just what the doctor ordered.
