REVIEW SUMMARY

As far as updated adaptations go, The Secret Garden is fully blossomed. And, fans of the book (or other film versions), can rest easy knowing that this movie still captures the spirit of the tale being told. There are a few modifications to said story however, which, for the most part, work wonders in simplifying things (not to mention bringing it down to an enjoyable length). Of course, the casting is key here, as a lot of the emotional connectivity rests on young Mary. And, well, Dixie Egerickx does the character justice, bringing a contagious amount of charm to the part (no doubt little girls everywhere will be practicing their British accents because of it). And for his part, Colin Firth delivers the goods as the tormented and begrudged Archibald. But, perhaps the movie’s secret weapon (pun intended) is the secret garden itself. Chockfull of wondrously vibrant visuals, the production team did a grade A job in bringing the magic of it to life! So, while it is very formulaic paint by numbers from the get-go, this Secret Garden remains as inviting as ever!
