Ben Wheatley’s Rebecca is quite the plodding journey. For one, the 121-minute film feels MUCH longer, thanks in part to three very distinct acts. It starts off as almost a romantic comedy, switching to a gothic drama, and ending with a legal mystery. The good news is that it looks absolutely beautiful, with the scenery on display being truly breathtaking. The performances are also equally appealing, although Armie Hammer could literally be swapped out with any other Hollywood leading actor and we’d get the same outcome. Yep, the juicy roles are reserved for the ladies here, with Lily James and Kristin Scott Thomas sinking some serious teeth into their performances. And while there are certainly some standout moments (a disastrous “ball party” being one of them), the movie suffers from a major case of bland disjointedness – not to mention a rather rushed ending. But, through it all, Rebecca will surely be one name you’ll not soon forget after viewing.
