Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers is many things, but it’s mainly a delightfully zany mockery of everything and anything. It’s silly, yet clever. It’s preposterous, yet heartfelt. In short, it’s way better than it has any right to be. Andy Samberg and John Mulaney do wonderful voice work, leading the way with zippy dialogue and hilarious reads. Also, get ready, because the cameos and entertainment-insider “Easter eggs” are so plentiful, that you’ll likely need multiple viewings to spot all the gags. Kudos to the non-Disney studios for lending their intellectual properties. Otherwise, we would be left without the likes of “Ugly Sonic” – and trust me, that would be a shame and a half. The movie literally blends in multiple genres with ease. It’s a buddy comedy, an action adventure, and a noir mystery all wrapped in one. Visually, however, it’s a bit less impressive. There is plenty of mixing human and animation (both “flat” and 3D), and sometimes it doesn’t come across as smooth as it should. I’m afraid it is not on par with Who Framed Roger Rabbit, although that titular bunny ironically makes an appearance. But, in the end, Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers serves as that rare movie that will entertain the adult crowd just as much as the kids – maybe more so. Regardless of your age though, entertainment is surely guaranteed.
