REVIEW SUMMARY
Tom Cruise’s return to the “Danger Zone” will legit take your breath away. Hands down one of the best movies of the year (or several for that matter), Top Gun: Maverick exceeded all expectations. The action is blazing, the drama heartfelt, and the visuals are oh-so stunning. If there is a movie to see on the big screen, this – is - it! And say what you will about Tom Cruise and his personal life, as an actor, he truly is a master of the craft. His intensity still burns brightly after all these years. His onscreen likability is still through the roof. And, his chemistry with his much younger cast members is undeniable. There is a passion for cinema on display that goes beyond Cruise though. Our director, Joseph Kosinski, has infused the film with all the nostalgia one could want (clear sun-kissed homages to the original’s director Tony Scott), but also giving the action a “contemporary awe effect.” And at 131 minutes, there’s not a dull stretch to be found. In fact, if the last 30 minutes don’t have the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end, then I suggest you see a doctor. The aerial dog fights are spectacular and likely the best to be done on film (and that’s saying something). Should you see the 36-year-old first film before going in? Probably – the emotional stakes will mean so much more if you do. But trust me, this is a movie to cheer about it. In short, it is what movies are made for!
