REVIEW SUMMARY

It's probably best that you decline Jessica M. Thompson’s The Invitation. Let’s just say the bite is sadly quite weak here. If anything, though, it’s all just wasted potential. The movie does a great job of providing an unsettling mood, giving way to gothic-laden atmosphere. But, there are some pretty paltry special effects thrown into the mix at times (they are hard to miss). The story is certainly intriguing and a does a nice enough job of building the relationships. But, the revelations are as predictable as they come. Then there’s the climax, which amounts to a tragically rushed mess. Honestly, they spend a good hour slowing things to halt and then resolve it all in under 20 minutes with an odd bombardment of “action.” There’s also some decent performances at hand, but the actors are not given the best dialogue to work with. Whether intentionally cryptic or not, it’s all just a little too muddled. Lastly, there is a true lack of horror. Aside from a few creaks and creepy looking things, there’s little in the way of actual frights. Which would be ok, except the adverts sell the movie as some sort of supernatural horror viewing experience. Unfortunately, those same advertisements give everything away and fail to show just how lame the whole thing is.
