REVIEW SUMMARY

Potent and dripping with conviction, Alice, Darling is a psychological drama that strikes all the right emotional chords. This is a slow burn tale of control, abuse, friendship, and most of all, the human strength to not only endure, but overcome trauma. And, for her part, Anna Kendrick nails it as our titular Alice. The vulnerability (not to mention believability) she brings to the role is subtle, yet oh so effective. In fact, it's the many subtleties in this movie that resonate the most. The hair tugging as a coping mechanism, the feigned smiles, and the little stammering lies add up, bringing the uneasiness to a boiling point. And when it does come to a head, it's palpable. Now, as skilled as the movie's beginning and middle may be, there's a rather clunky finish. Not going to drop any spoilers of course, but let's just say there's a head scratching "payoff" to the whole missing person storyline. What’s that, I didn't mention that part of the plot? Well, it's probably for the best, as it admittedly adds very little to the otherwise engrossing story at hand. So, while Alice, Darling isn't perfect, you can be sure that it's perfectly affecting.
