Precision procedural filmmaking at its most riveting, Anatomy of a Fall is both technically and emotionally fascinating. But let’s get one thing straight, this isn’t your typical murder mystery type movie. The drawn-out trial and court proceedings are less a dissection of a death, and more an analysis of a marriage. Don’t worry though, it’s always captivating. This is thanks to a constant layering of intrigue and new fascinating wrinkles to the story throughout. But while the entire film will keep you on edge, it’s the opening sequence that proves especially hypnotizing. The use of disorienting sound and snowy alpine visuals are hauntingly beautiful. It sets the stage for the avalanche of emotional turmoil to come. There’s also something to be said for the use of languages here. The switch from French to English throughout (depending on the characters) is culturally expansive, and effective in its use. The authenticity of the performances is also to be praised. Sandra Huller is at peak performance, as is the director of it all, Justine Triet. Yes, Anatomy of a Fall is truly something to behold – a thrilling and intellectual journey filled with love and loveless. It’s an exercise in life’s unexpected roadblocks and how we react to them. Oh, and good luck getting 50 Cent’s “P.I.M.P.” out of your head afterwards. You’ve been warned!
