SYNOPSIS

It is based on the video game franchise of the same name.

Mike Schmidt, a troubled security guard, accepts a night-time job at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, a once-successful but now abandoned family entertainment center, where he discovers its four animatronic mascots – Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy – move and kill anyone that is still there after midnight.

REVIEW SUMMARY

Emma Tammi's Five Nights at Freddy's is a quirky horror freak show that's sure to divide audiences. Yes, this is a weird ride, one that fans of the video game will eat up entirely, while casual viewers will almost certainly be left scratching their heads. That's because the movie is more than just a "Chuck E Cheese is trying to kill you" narrative. There's actually plenty more to it. The movie is brimming with lore and historied characters. I mean, there have been a whopping 11 FNAF games to pull from after all. And while I won't say that it's convoluted or anything, it's surely overstuffed with bizarre backstories, Easter eggs, and let's not forget, lapses in logic. Yep, oddly enough, the best parts of the movie are when the plot points are dropped in favor of Freddy and the gang doing their (murderous) thing. These scenes play out as campy and fun entertainment, in the same way that M3GAN was. Plus. There's a wonderful asthetic at play. The abandoned retro restaurant is a production design chef's kiss, with its contrasting shadowy and playful vibe. If only the unhinged action that took place there meant as much to everyone else as it does hardcore fans. Maybe a sequel can fix that. I say bring on Balloon Boy!
