REVIEW SUMMARY

In Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn, the decadent debauchery leads to shock and awe. Ok, maybe mostly shock. Yes, this is a movie that has moments that will either disturb you, disgust you, or haunt you. I’m still not over the “bathtub drain scene.” Yes, it’s more devilishly twisted depravity from Fennell, and it’s surely not going to be for everyone. But, one can’t deny that this movie is wholly captivating. It’s a move that constantly claws at your curiosity and makes it so you can’t look away. It also helps that the cast is incredibly committed. I mean, the things Barry Keoghan does is impressive – sometimes sick, but impressive, nonetheless. Everybody plays their part to a T, but Rosamund Pike deserves a special shout out for her deliciously matriarch portrayal. But, as great as everyone is, this really is Keoghan’s film. There’s a real transformation and evolution to the character that is pulled off expertly. There’s also an expert touch when it comes to the movie’s production design. Our director has once more wrapped everything in her candy-coated visuals, chockfull of extravagant beauties (not to mention a few eyesores). Now, can the proceedings feel too manipulated in its eagerness to shock the viewer? Definitely. But with the story being told, the more eyebrows raised, the better!
