5 WORST FILMS OF 2023
5. 65
You can’t really mess up a movie about Adam Driver fighting dinosaurs, can you? Well, as it turns out, yes, yes you can. Sadly, 65 is an unremarkable sci-fi slog, and it’s mostly due to a real lack of a creative spark beyond the bonkers premise. What could have been a fun sci-fi creature feature, is instead a forgetful CGI slug fest. Adam Driver and dinosaurs deserved so much better!
4. FREELANCE
When it comes to Pierre Morel's Freelance, all I can say is thank God for John Cena. Without the hulking, yet charmingly charismatic actor, this low rent action film would be nearly unwatchable. The entire thing is frustratingly predictable and painfully unoriginal. It also doesn't help that there are green screen effects that 8-year-olds could certainly pull off better on their home computers!
3. MEG 2: THE TRENCH
Thanks to a waterlogged script, Meg 2: The Trench is a toothless B-movie bore. How could a movie about a giant prehistoric shark be so dull you ask? Well, for one, the first half of the movie is bogged down by exposition nonsense and a trip to the bottom of the ocean where things are so dark and murky you can barely see what’s going on. By the time we get what we all came for, it’s too little too late to care!
2. MAFIA MAMMA
An epic misfire, Mafia Mamma sure ain’t The Godfather. In fact, it’s actually not so much a movie as it is a concept. The uninspired script, overdone cliches, and insipid character motivations sink the movie as if it were wearing cement shoes! What could have been an interesting feminist twist on the mob genre, instead amounts to a bland serving of regret – “Fuhgeddaboudit!”
1. EXPEND4BLE
It's definitely time for these mercenaries to retire - please! Scott Waugh’s 4th instalment of the The Expendables shoots blanks at nearly every turn. The impressive star power is all but wasted here as they are all thrust into a brain dead plot with very little to do – let alone show what they actually can do. Making matters worse (much worse) is the cringe-inducing dialogue and failed attempts at humour. Here's hoping this serves as the final death knell for this -ahem- expendable franchise.
