Sherren Lee’s Float is a shallow romance drama that does little more than tread water. On the plus side, it’s a harmless and gentle viewing experience, albeit a forgettable one. And that’s the problem, the film lacks an emotional punch. Yes, the romance is contrived, and yes, it’s overly predictable. However, I will say that our stars, Robbie Amell and Andrea Bang, have genuine chemistry with one another (which is half the battle with these type of movies). Unfortunately, the story plays out in a breezy and tepid manner. The film does touch on some interesting cultural aspects, however, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t root for the duo. And hey, the picturesque Vancouver backdrop is a refreshing change of setting. If only the script was as fresh. Alas, there’s only so much nice-looking landscapes and likeable actors can do to keep things, well, afloat.
