A true rollicking blockbuster with lots to cheer about, David Leitch’s The Fall Guy is as good of time as you can have in front of a screen for 2 hours and 7 minutes! A big part of the appeal is, of course, our 2 leads – Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt! The duo has undeniable chemistry, and their flirtatious banter is effortlessly endearing (I could seriously just watch them talk about something like the weather for hours and be entertained). The movie also benefits from some blistering pacing. Things whiz by with one action set piece after another. As for, you know, the stunts, there are definitely a handful of exciting ones on display, like and a scene where Gosling’s character surfs through the streets of Sydney, Australia, towed behind a moving vehicle. There’s also plenty of comedy and romance thrown in for good measure. And, while the plot itself is as ham-fisted as you might expect, it remains a lot of fun. The Fall Guy also serves as a surprisingly endearing love letter to not only stunt men and women, but cinema as a whole. Heck, one character is constantly reciting classic movie quotes. But while its self-referential and meta, it never gets too “inside baseball.” Unfortunately, things do run a tad overlong, making the third act a bit tiresome – especially since the outcome is a forgone conclusion. The good news is that the soundtrack is always rocking, constantly injecting adrenaline into the proceedings. And if you aren’t leaving the theatre with a smile on your face, you may want to consult a doctor.
