REVIEW SUMMARY

Ruthless and thrilling with a side-door love story — Sean Byrne’s Dangerous Animals is the ultimate summer shark bite. What’s more thrilling than a survival tale with man-eating sharks? Try throwing in a sadistic serial killer who uses the ocean as his personal dumping ground — and films it for fun. It may sound like B-movie camp, but Byrne makes it disturbingly effective, putting a fresh, (not to mention brutal) spin on the shark-attack genre. And, for his part, Jai Courtney is downright chilling - fully unhinged and terrifying in the best ways. Hassie Harrison and Josh Heuston bring real heart — and cute chemistry — giving the carnage a pulse of humanity. For real, their bond feels genuine, even as the blood begins to spill around them. The film also plays with the idea of who the real predators are: nature, or us? And while it leans into classic survival-horror tropes, our director elevates them with stylish direction and nerve-shredding tension. You’ll be gripping your seat — and maybe shielding your eyes — right up to the last bite.
