REVIEW SUMMARY

Ryan Gosling is at his most endearing in this smart-but-soulful sci-fi dazzler. Yep – this delivers just the right amount of wide-eyed wonder. Of course, Gosling anchors the entire experience, turning what could’ve been a standard popcorn romp into something far more heartfelt. It’s also a true blockbuster with world-altering stakes and plenty of exhilarating outer-space spectacle. And while the film proudly flexes its “brainy” sci-fi credentials, it never drifts into the inaccessible. It’s clever without being convoluted, thoughtful without being pretentious. Nothing feels dumbed down; it simply feels “clear.” What truly elevates the film, though, is the adorable and irresistible bond between Gosling’s character and his alien companion, Rocky. Their unlikely friendship unfolds with disarming sincerity, and the movie sells it completely. Gosling brings such warmth and earnestness to the relationship that you forget he’s essentially acting opposite a rock-like puppet. Their connection isn’t just believable - it’s the emotional heartbeat that keeps the film grounded. You don’t just watch their bond, you root for it. But, the movie has more on its mind than this interstellar bromance. In fact, nearly an hour passes before Rocky even enters the story - and those “human moments” (told through flashbacks) are just as compelling. They flesh out the stakes, deepen the mystery, and provide an emotional roadmap for the journey to come. And through it all, Gosling carries the narrative on his shoulders. He is in virtually every frame of this nearly three-hour odyssey after all. Visually, the film is a triumph. It’s dazzling, sometimes even breathtaking, blending practical effects with cinematic scale. The spaceship interiors have a tactile, lived-in authenticity too. If you have access to an IMAX theater, that’s unquestionably the way to see this - the film’s scope practically begs for it. Perhaps most impressive of all, though, is the movie’s beating heart: it’s hopeful. It’s uplifting. It believes in humanity’s capacity for bravery, ingenuity, and compassion. You leave feeling inspired, maybe even restored. And if a sci-fi rollercoaster filled with cosmic peril and life-altering themes can send you out of the cinema wearing a genuine smile, then as far as I’m concerned, that’s a mission accomplished.
