REVIEW SUMMARY

Damien Chazelle's Babylon is, in 2 words: f***ing wild! Oh yes, this truly is a movie of decadence, depravity and excess. That last one might be most fitting however, as the 3-hour runtime pushes the over-the-top entertainment to its limits. But, entertained you will be, as Babylon offers up such spectacular moments as Margot Robbie fighting a snake, Brad Pitt falling from a balcony, and an elephant defecating on a grown man (the latter in the first 5 minutes). There's also a drug-fueld party/orgy to beat all drug-fueled party/orgies. And, admittedly, it's a glorious sight to behold. Chazelle moves the camera around with ecstasy, letting the audience experience the jubilant chaos along with his characters. And even as the energy changes along with the time periods, the memorable sequences don't stop. In fact, there's a late in the film story dedicated to Tobey Maguire as a bizarre mob boss. It's equal parts revolting and fascinating, and Maguire plays the depraved part to grotesque perfection. Trust me, it needs to be seen to be believed. Scratch that, the entire movie needs to be seen to be believed (especially the agonizingly hilarious "sound recording" scene). And for all the balls-to-the-wall performances, it's Babylon's soundtrack and score that makes for the biggest highlight. The music is big, bold, and just as wild as the images on screen. If only the movie as a whole was more definitive in its message. It's clear Chazelle is a massive film fanboy, but the extravagance muddies exactly what he's trying to say about the cinematic experience (that, and some poor writing along the way). But, there's no denying Babylon's frenetic energy and glamorous output. It's something you won't soon forget.
