REVIEW SUMMARY

When Idris Elba fights a CGI lion, the winner is us. Yes, Baltasar Kormakur’s Beast is a movie that knows exactly what it is - a thrilling survival B-movie. But even with the campiness cranked up high, there are still moments of genuine pulse pounding suspense. Ok, the “jump scares” are a little overdone. And, are you likely to yell at the screen as a result of all the bone-headed decisions the characters make? Probably. But, that doesn’t take away from Elba’s likability. Similar to Dwayne Johnson or Tom Cruise, there’s just an inherent charisma that leads to unwavering amiability. That is to say that you will have no problem rooting for him. But, it’s the disposable story that could have used more work. Despite being silly and (mostly) illogical, there are a number of plot holes. The “Jaws of the Jungle” concept is a good one though, and like that OG shark film, you’ll find yourself going along with it all ‘til the end. And to top it off, Beast sports a pleasantly brisk pace and a much appreciated 93-minute runtime. Now that’s something to roar about!
