REVIEW SUMMARY

A big blue electrifying surprise, Blue Beetle stands as an energetic and refreshing big screen introduction to one of DC’s best kept secrets. Yes, comic fans surely know how fun of a character Blue Beetle is, and now moviegoers do to. But, it’s not just our titular hero who shines brightly here. Nope, this is a family affair, with each member of the Reyes clan adding a unique flair to the proceedings (and I do mean each one). And, if I’m being honest, it’s the moments shared with the family members that work best. Yep, even more so than the battle scenes. But don’t worry action fans, there’s still plenty of bombastic fights and extravagant explosions to be had. The movie also marks a wonderful touchstone for Latino culture. Trust me, the setting and various cultural touches are quite inspired in this now bloated superhero genre. Is everything perfect? Not quite. Susan Sarandon’s villainous plot as the film’s baddie is a little too paint-by-numbers. Also, the whole “figuring out the powers” stuff is incredibly redundant (Shazam did it better by the way). Luckily, there are no complaints in the acting department! Yep, Cobra Kai’s Xolo Maridueña is effortlessly effective as our lead hero, not only exuding charisma and charm in spades, but is also able to hit the requisite emotional chords when needed. In short, you have no problem rooting for him. George Lopez also deserves a special shoutout, as he steals plenty of scenes with his crazy comical turn as Jamie’s uncle Rudy. The rest of the cast also have great chemistry, making their interactions genuine and affecting. So yes, if you’re like me, you’ll go in for the sci-fi superhero adventure, but stay for the warm-hearted family dynamics.
