Yorgos Lanthimos’ Bugonia is a deliriously entertaining descent into societal madness with exceptionally measured turns from Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons. And yes, if you call this movie weird - you’d be right. But, it’s weird in all the best, most intoxicating ways. However, like much of Lanthimos’ work, it won’t be for everyone (especially the ending), but for those who get on its wavelength, it’s a hypnotic experience. Tension, humor, and even horror bleed seamlessly into one another. And just when you think you’ve figured out its rhythms and rhythm, it veers in a completely new direction - again and again and again. Genre-wise, Bugonia is hard to pin down (did I even mention the sci-fi elements?). But that ambiguity is part of its brilliance. And, beneath the absurdity lies a razor-sharp commentary on misinformation, conspiracy thinking, and humanity’s knack for self-destruction. It’s at once a critique of oppressive economic systems and a mirror reflecting our collective inability to change. And trust me, by the end, you’re not just watching the chaos - you’re questioning your own place in it. As for performances, Stone is a powerhouse, commanding the screen as a stoic businesswoman fighting for survival. Plemons is equally mesmerizing - unhinged, terrifying, and heartbreakingly broken as a conspiracy zealot on the absolute edge. If these two aren’t in this year’s awards conversation, something is seriously wrong. So, if you crave unhinged cinema with something substantial to chew on, Bugonia serves up a full-course feast!
