Looney homages, wily mischief and clever real-world relevance make this part-human, part-toon buddy comedy a big ‘ol blast. Yep, Dave Green’s Coyote vs. Acme definitely proves it’s worth — and practically shoves that worthiness down Warner Bros.’ throat, seeing as how the studio infamously attempted to shelve the finished film outright. But here we are, with the movie finally seeing the light of day. And thankfully, it delivers a really great time, making the most of its wonderful premise. You see, with Wile E. Coyote taking Acme to court after yet another series of disastrous product fails, we get a slew of fun and inspired human characters — namely Will Forte’s injury lawyer, Kevin Avery. The friendship that (eventually) blossoms between Kevin and Coyote is, dare I say, genuinely heartwarming. And while there’s some real emotion to be found here, the movie never loses sight of what brought us to the party in the first place: silly, inventive, and surprisingly savvy laughs. The movie does a terrific job of bringing back classic characters, familiar gags and iconic Looney Tunes mayhem - while giving them enough of a refresh rather than recycled. In other words, it’s a movie that younger viewers unfamiliar with the brand can have a blast discovering, while adults can revel in the callbacks, Easter Eggs and deep-cut references. There’s something for both generations here, and the film knows exactly how to walk that line without talking down to either one. Even better, the themes of corporate greed and the little guy standing up for himself are not only timeless, but incredibly timely. The film’s real-world struggle against being shelved mirrors its on-screen David-versus-Goliath story almost perfectly, turning Coyote vs. Acme itself into an unlikely underdog triumph against corporate indifference. So, in a weird way, the movie ended up living its own story. Wile E. Coyote just wanted justice from a giant corporation — and so did this movie. And against all odds, they both got their day in court. So, thanks Warner Bros!
