REVIEW SUMMARY
Mega-meta and cameo-stuffed fan service reign supreme in Shawn Levy’s Deadpool & Wolverine. And, what can I say, that’s a good thing – as long as you’re “in the know.” That’s because this movie almost entirely caters to the biggest fanboys (and girls) out there. The “in jokes” and nods to Marvel lore is too numerous to count. There’s Easter Eggs galore and the aforementioned cameos are sure to put plenty of smiles on audience’s faces. So, needless to say, it’s best you avoid spoilers at all costs. This because, well, the whole thing is pretty much a series of them. And, if you are worried about the very R-rated Deadpool character making the jump to Disney following the Fox acquisition, don’t be. The “Merc with a Mouth” is still as outrageously offensive as ever. Heck, maybe even more so. The film certainly has no shortage of ultra-crude humor and cartoonishly-violent battle sequences (so – much – stabbing). It’s as over the top as you’d expect it to be though, and, for his part, Ryan Reynolds is completely effortless in his prodding portrayal. Deadpool really is a natural fit for him, and Reynolds embodies the immature antics to perfection. But, as much as this is a Deadpool-centric film, Hugh Jackman steals his share of scenes. In fact, there’s two instances (one in a car and the other at a campfire) where the Australian actor cuts deep with some soulful monologues. I mean, these types of emotional sequences are few and far between, but Jackman delivers when he needs to. He’s also pretty badass when he needs to be. And if you thought having him don the comics accurate yellow Wolverine costume was just more fan service, you’d be wrong. There’s a legitimately powerful reason behind it. Also powerful, is this movie’s nostalgia for superhero flicks of yesteryear. Yep, there’s a wonderful love letter to the “Fox era” cast of super characters at paly here (especially in an end credit montage). The movie is packed with a lot of actually. Too much stuff? Maybe. But with Deadpool, excess is kinda the name of the game.
