REVIEW SUMMARY
Christian Gudegast’s sequel to Den of Thieves overcomes an extra tedious first half with a thrillingly cerebral second. This border-crossing heist film delivers exactly what you’d hope for: likeable thieves pulling off daring, high-stakes robberies. And what can I say, Gerard Butler is once more a gruffy (and grumpy) delight as “Big Nick,” whose chemistry with O’Shea Jackson Jr. no doubt anchors the movie. The film, of course, hinges on their work together. The pair, along with the rest of the rag tag group of thieves, are fun to watch – and most importantly, root for. While the film does suffer from more than a bit of lethargy at parts, with the lead-up to the finale feeling sludge-like slow, the white knuckle and bullet-fuelled climax delivers plenty of action. The picturesque Nice, France setting adds a nice lavish and expansive backdrop to the action, lending a polished edge to the gritty story. What’s most unexpected, however, is the film’s emotional core. Beneath the grit and grime lies genuine heart among the characters, adding welcome depth. And no spoilers of course, but the movie does leave things open (very open) for a third instalment. And honestly? I’m here for it. I say bring on more of Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr.’s crime-filled escapades.
