REVIEW SUMMARY
For non Poké-holics, Detective Pikachu is not so much a “ Pokémon Go," but rather " Pokémon So-So." Sure there are things that do indeed work here, like the unique neo-noir aesthetic, the fun world building, Ryan Reynolds, the... ok, that's all I got in the "win column." The film unfortunately has a longer "miss list," with things like plot, character development, dialogue, the whole third act, did I mention plot? It's almost as if the film didn't know what it wanted to be, or worse, tried to be too many things. Is this a hard-boiled moody mystery story? Perhaps a big budget CGI fantasy adventure? Or just a juvenile action comedy? It's really all of the above, and as you might imagine, the results are mixed - at best. Thankfully Reynolds consistently breathes life into things with his truly witty and smart-mouthed remarks, all masked under the adorable cuteness of our titular "detective." Trust me, without him, the movie would be much less of a catch.
