Dreamwork’s Forgotten Island is a wildly imaginative animated adventure that blends exhilarating visuals, heartfelt friendship, and wonderfully wild Filipino mythology. Yep, this is one seriously fun family-friendly cocktail of laughs, emotion and discovery. And while the movie certainly knows how to deliver spectacle, its emotional core is what really makes it work - because you’ll genuinely fall for these friends and find yourself rooting for their friendship every step of the way. But this isn’t your standard “friends end up somewhere unfamiliar and have to find their way home” adventure. Nope, Forgotten Island almost plays like an animated The Hangover. Our heroes awaken with absolutely no memory of what transpired, leaving them to piece together the events of the previous night by following a trail of clues — while relying on their unpredictable guide, Raww, to help them navigate this strange and increasingly chaotic world. And, naturally, the further they go, the more bizarre surprises they uncover. What starts as a simple mission to get home quickly becomes a wonderfully unpredictable adventure filled with strange creatures, unexpected twists, and all kinds of lovable — and occasionally downright weird — characters. The Filipino mythology is also a huge part of what gives the movie its personality. Rather than simply using the mythology as window dressing, Forgotten Island builds its world around these fantastical elements, giving the adventure a distinct cultural flavour and filling the screen with creatures and characters that feel fresh and imaginative. There’s a real sense of discovery here, and you never quite know what’s going to pop up around the next corner. And then there’s the animation, which is absolutely gorgeous. The film employs a hybrid style that mixes soft 3D computer-generated rendering with hand-drawn 2D sequences, vibrant ’90s-inspired neon aesthetics and anime-influenced maximalism. And yeah, that sounds like A LOT — because it is! But somehow, it all comes together beautifully. But as eye-popping as Forgotten Island can be, it’s ultimately the story and those characters that make the biggest impression. Beneath all the mythology, colourful creatures and visual fireworks is a genuinely sweet story about friendship, trust and finding your way home — both literally and emotionally.
