REVIEW SUMMARY
Like the MonsterVerse entries before it, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (I’m told the “x” is silent btw) delivers highly entertaining monster-sized mass destruction! And, frankly, is that not all we want from these movies? If you’re looking for a sophisticated plot with any semblance of logic, I’m afraid you’re not going to find it here. What you will find (in excess) however, is colossal rock ‘em sock ‘em fun. Big, loud, and incredibly dumb, these movies don’t pretend to be something they’re not. They deliver awe-inspiring special effects and over-the-top action. Does it lose its muster the more it goes on? It definitely does, but the showdowns are exciting, nonetheless. There’s also a lot of monster character featured – perhaps too many if I’m being honest. The filmmakers were wise to pare down the “human” roles this time around though, putting the focus more on the titans. You know, the characters that we all came to see. Although, Dan Stevens does make for a fun addition to the cast of humans. I can’t help but feel that Godzilla fans will be left a tad disappointed though, seeing as how the movie skews greatly in Kong’s favor. I mean, we get some cool moments with the “King of Monsters,” but this is essentially a Kong flick. Heck, we even get introduced to a mini-Kong. Who knows, maybe we’ll get a mini-Zilla in the sequel?
