REVIEW SUMMARY
Cheeky, campy, and creepy in all the best ways, Josh Ruben’s Heart Eyes is the rom-com slasher you never knew you needed in your life. Yep, the film is a delightful blend of bloody horror and romantic comedy, effortlessly combining both genres to create an experience that will surely resonate with fans of each. But here’s the thing—you can’t take it too seriously. After all, the film doesn’t. That’s because it’s constantly winking at the audience, embracing its campiness to the fullest. Naturally, with that, comes plenty of laughs. And while the humor is no doubt witty, sharp and self-aware, the horror aspect remains surprisingly effective. This thanks to the brutally gruesome kills delivered by the film’s savage slasher. Warning: you’ll want to get your “gag reflex” in check. Oh yes, ol’ Heart Eyes may not be as terrifying as say Ghostface, but trust me, he’s got an intimidating presence of his own. The mask alone is a delightfully eerie visual - plus there’s a few other signature tricks up his sleeve, like those deadly 'cupid arrow' weapons. And like any good slasher, there’s an intriguing mystery around just who is behind the mask. Admittedly, the reveal is a bit on the bland side – expected even. But hey, the ride to get there is a blast. As was the chemistry between our two leads Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding, the latter really giving into the role of the suave and charming “knight in shining armour.” And, while Heart Eyes is being promoted as a Valentine’s Day date movie, just know that it’s a solid pick for any moviegoer seeking a fun and entertaining watch—even those flying solo.
