REVIEW SUMMARY

King Richard is nothing short of a winning biographical sports drama through and through! Incredibly heartfelt (not to mention inspirational), Reinaldo Marcus Green helms a wonderfully nuanced journey worthy of the legendary sports icons it depicts. Of course, it’s the tennis star sister’s unorthodox father who is the main attraction. With another transformative A-grade performance under his belt, Will Smith commands the screen with undeterred conviction as Richard Williams, father of Venus and Serena. The portrayal is as layered as they come, with Smith easily handling the emotional stakes. You’ll love, hate, and pity the man in any give scene – sometimes all at once. And while it’s definitely a feel-good story, it’s one that can’t escape the sports movie clichés that inhabit the genre. While nothing is laid on too thick here, there’s a healthy amount of heavy-handed life lessons. Regardless, the end result is touching, heartwarming even. There’s a wholesomeness to it all, and frankly, it’s rather refreshing (we truly are in the Ted Lasso era). Add in a stellar turn from Jon Bernthal as renowned coach Rick Maci, and you’ve got one e of the absolute must see films this year!
