In the 1970s, young Gru tries to join a group of supervillains called the Vicious 6 after they oust their leader -- the legendary fighter Wild Knuckles. When the interview turns disastrous, Gru and his Minions go on the run with the Vicious 6 hot on their tails. Luckily, he finds an unlikely source for guidance -- Wild Knuckles himself -- and soon discovers that even bad guys need a little help from their friends.
REVIEW SUMMARY
Those dastardly little yellow pipsqueaks did it again! That is, the Minions have delivered another highly entertaining vibrant ride for the kiddie crowd. Here’s the thing though, this isn’t Pixar-level storytelling. But, that’s not what the Minions: The Rise of Gru is going for. You see, it delivers what it is selling: plenty of silliness, an abundance of gags, and a playfulness that kids (and adults) can easily latch onto. In short, it’s just plain fun. And following a seemingly never-ending series of delays during the cinematic “Covid-era,” it’s refreshing to have a big ‘ol zany popcorn film like this back on the big screen. And hey, Steve Carell and Taraji P. Henson clearly had fun with the voices again. And with the likes of Michelle Yeoh, Julie Andrews and even Jean-Claude Van Damme lending their vocal chops this time around, it makes for a pretty diverse set of characters. And did I mention it’s all set in the visually psychedelic 70s? So, whether you like it or not, the Minions are back, and I can assure you that kids will be welcoming their return with open arms!
