Mortal Engines is a lot like Mad Max if it were made for the YA crowd. And the problem with that is that it falls right in line with all the other sub-par dystopian Young Adult films out there (Maze Runner, Divergent, 5^th Wave…). Now there is no doubt that the concept is intriguing. I mean, “London on wheels eating up rogue vehicles," hell yeah - am I right?  But the execution is unfortunately terribly sluggish and downright underwhelming. However, the visuals, as you’d imagine, are pretty great at times. Heck, the opening 15 or so minutes held great promise with a revved up and high octane action sequence. But alas, all went down hill quickly with an uninteresting story chock full of weak characters, predictable (and not so subtle) foreshadowing with information dumps / flashback sequences aplenty. At the mid-way point you'll hope that they just pump the breaks on the whole thing. But no such luck, they keep the engine going into overlong status and until all interest is completely lost.
