REVIEW SUMMARY

While mostly uninspired, Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises remains a completely serviceable animated adventure for the kiddie crowd. But, when comparing it to those star-studded live action Night at the Museum films, it unfortunately doesn’t hold a candle. Yep, the enchanting charm that made the Ben Stiller-starring flicks so endearing is all but missing, replaced with “Scooby Doo” levels of hijinks and silliness. It also doesn’t help that there is no real star power involved in the voice performance department. Again, part of the fun of those original movies was seeing (and hearing) known celebrities take on a variety of historical figures. In this animated adaptation, however, the characters are given pretty standard reads, this despite their designs resembling the actors of the movies past. It’s not all lackluster though, as there is certainly a fun (and often funny) journey at hand. There are definitely things that can be done in the world of animation that can’t properly be put on screen when done in live action, and this outing surely leans into that. Plus, there are loads of building blocks placed in order to give the story a fresh direction going forward. In fact, the whole thing feels like some backdoor TV pilot for a Night at the Museum animated series. And, admittedly, this version would work much better in 30-minute cartoon form. Because, as a movie, it never moves past the “sufficient” marker.
