REVIEW SUMMARY

While our feisty feline hero is still as cute as ever in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, it’s the delightfully clever script that makes it a cut above the rest. The story truly is an inspired one, homing in on themes around mortality and legacy, while still bringing about the hilariously subverted fairy-tale/folk tale hijinks we’ve grown accustomed to in these “Shrek movies.” Plus, there’s some fun cameos and call backs to past films in the franchise. It truly is a witty little tale, one filled with plenty of engaging characters, each with their own personal quests for happiness and success. I guess you can say that the stakes are higher this time around, as are the emotions (don’t be ashamed if you shed a tear or two – you won’t be alone). Of course, Antonio Banderas continues to be the perfect voice star for the Zorro-adjacent character. His silky read and playful cadence give Puss in Boots likability in spades. The rest of the voice cast hold their own mind you, with Salma Hayek especially making for a welcome return as Kitty Softpaws, while Florence Pugh proves she can really do no wrong as Goldilocks. Yep, with great talent involved and a splendid animation style on display, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is inspired PG entertainment at its best. I guess you can say it’s a purrrfectly executed sequel!
