REVIEW SUMMARY
Ash Avildsen’s Queen of the Ring features the highs and lows of Mildred Burke’s life told in a soapy, yet captivating, melodrama. This sweeping film spans several decades, covering plenty of ground—Mildred’s love life, career, motherhood, and role as a trailblazer are all explored. It’s certainly ambitious, perhaps even a bit overstuffed. The good news is that you’ll have no trouble finding yourself fully invested in her journey , not to mention the battles she faces both inside and outside the ring. The film also introduces a host of supporting characters, many of whom will be familiar to pro wrestling fans. And while not all of them receive equal focus, their presence certainly adds depth, highlighting their contributions to the sport’s history. More importantly, Queen of the Ring sheds light on a story that has rarely been told in mainstream pop culture—making it both an eye-opening and inspiring tale of perseverance against the odds. One of the film’s greatest strengths is the respect and care it brings to its subject matter. There’s a clear dedication to authenticity, from the historical details to the way Mildred’s legacy is honored. The period-piece elements are also well-executed, further immersing the audience in the time and place. However, the melodrama can be a bit heavy-handed, occasionally dipping into soap-opera territory. Thankfully, the overall strong performances help ground the story, elevating it into a heartfelt and earnest depiction of the birth of women’s wrestling and one of its most influential figures. All hail Mildred Burke!
