REVIEW SUMMARY
Pop quiz: what road trip movie has more than enough heart to overcome the uneven comedy? Why, Quiz Lady of course. Yep, in an example of charm conquering an overflow of fluff, Jessica Yu’s Quiz Lady is an effortlessly enjoyable misadventure. So much of the appeal of these types of films rests on the actors leading the way. And, well, Sandra Oh and Awkwafina make for the perfect doting duo. Despite some D-level material sprinkled in, their chemistry remains A-grade throughout. Trust me, their yin-yang personality types go a long way in driving the laughs. And it's a good thing too, because the written gags don't do it on their own. In fact, there's an admitted lack of real laugh-out-loud moments. I mean, there's plenty of chuckles by way of quirky humor (Will Ferrell is a delight in an uncharacteristically restrained turn as the gameshow host) but there’s nothing that will you make spit put your drink or anything. Luckily, Quiz Lady stays on course despite all the bumps in the road. And, thanks to Sandra Oh and Awkwafina, it's a ride worth taking!
