REVIEW SUMMARY
Fiercely unconventional and daringly potent, Jacques Audiard’s Emelia Perez is like nothing you’ve ever seen. An almost modern-day opera, it’s actually difficult to nail down what genre it falls into. While it is a musical, it’s also a gritty crime drama – not mention a feel-good comedy and sentimental melodrama. Let’s just say it is very genre bending. But hey, given the subject of the film, perhaps giving it a “label” isn’t necessarily important. What is important to note, however, is that this film is impeccably crafted. It’s also a novel way to explore the themes around trans acceptance and the inability to escape one’s past. The script is biting, the songs fierce and performances impeccable. It’s a near chef’s kiss all the way around. Now, is it all a little too much at times? Admittedly yes. The big shootout finale is pretty bananas, but hey, so is the whole plot (which oddly reminded me of Mrs. Doubtfire at times). Luckily, Emelia Perez boasts an A-grade cast that was definitely up for the task at hand. Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, and Selena Gomez should all be bracing themselves for lots and lots of “awards love.” They all sparkle in their respective roles, while Gascón deserves an extra tip of the hat for giving a marvellously powerful turn as Emelia. Powerful might just be the ideal word to describe everything about the film, as it really packs a powerful punch on all fronts!
