More narrative depth, same gloriously revved up action – Furiosa is another win for the Mad Max franchise! Yep, nobody does postapocalyptic action quite like George Miller! In keeping with the previous movies, Furiosa is wonderfully weird and brutally bleak. It’s also got all the exhilarating car, truck, and motor bike chases you expect - although the sandy road races are not entirely on par with that of Fury Road. Regardless, there’s plenty of breathless action to keep you rumbling in your seat – not to mention eyepopping visual splendor to take in at literally every turn. What this film does do better than any of its predecessors though, is give the story major meat on the bone. It’s more sprawling and intertwined than ever before, giving the world, and its key players, much bigger scope. By expanding the mythology and “filling in the gaps,” it actually enriches the movies that came before. And really, isn’t that the point of a prequel in the first place? As for performances, Anya Taylor Joy has no problem taking over the titular character’s reigns from Charlize Theron. Joy embraces the bad ass nature of the Furiosa, leaving her mark with an impressively physical performance that required little words, but much action. If I’m being honest though, Chris Hemsworth is the film’s true MVP. The hulking actor’s portrayal of Lord Dementus is all sorts of insane (in the best way possible). There’s a lot going on with this character and Hemsworth plays it with desperately twisted delight. His range is on point, giving Dementus a comical, tormented, and psychopathic read all at once! Also on point is the movie’s many technical aspects. Like Fury Road, this installment’s production and sound elements are top notch. It all adds up to the definition of a movie made for the big screen. Just make it the biggest screen you can find!
