A revved-up triumph of performances and cinematography, Jeff Nichol’s The Bikeriders serves as a wonderful showcase of talent – both on and off the screen. With perhaps the best ensemble of actors in recent memory, each performer is outstanding in their respective roles. There’s an authenticity oozing off each and every one of them (right down to the native accents), making their onscreen turns wholly captivating. And while Austin Butler and Tom Hardy bring exuberant amounts of smoldering charisma to the proceedings, it’s actually Jodie Comer who steals the film from all the macho men. As Kathy, Comer is the heart of the movie – not to mention narrator, taking us along for the wildly multifaceted journey of the biker gang known as The Vandals. Thankfully, it’s an enjoyable journey, one that spans decades of friendship and loyalty. I mean, there’s also violence and bloodshed, but that’s never the focus – until the end, that is. The story is the overall weak spot here though. You see, it’s a little too conventional for all the knockout performances on display. And while its look at motorcycle culture is an impactful one, there’s unfortunately more than a few meandering moments. Fortunately, the visuals are nothing short of a mighty chef’s kiss. There’s a real beauty to all the grittiness on display, as well as the exceptional period details. And from smoke-filled bars to dusty roadways, it all feels so damn tangible. I suppose if you’re going to adapt a renowned picture book, you need to do justice to the images. Well, they definitely did – and then some. So, go on, gear up for a ride full of visual splendor and star-proving performances. Trust me, it’s totally a ride worth taking!
