REVIEW SUMMARY

When it comes to Jeff Fowler’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3, bigger stakes, breakneck action, and double the Jim Carey make it the best entry yet. What can I say, these films are a real blast, and this third installment delivers even more of the giddy entertainment we’ve come to love. Trust me, young or old, it’s hard not to get swept up in the vibrant action, adventurous spirit, and undeniable charm of it all. And while the lovable CGI heros and villains once more shine, it’s Jim Carrey who steals the show. His portrayal of Dr. Robotnik is nothing short of a marvel at this point, dialing up his signature exuberance to vintage Carrey levels of hilarity. Plus, he pulls double duty this time, also playing Robotnik’s grandfather. For his part, Ben Schwartz, as the voice of Sonic, also continues to be a delight - channeling a Ryan Reynolds-esque effortless joy. The plot? Well, it’s over the top of course, but that’s part of the charm. And yes, a lot of the bonkers narrative is ripped straight from the video games. But hey, it works. Admittedly, the final act stretches on a bit too long, making some of the excitement wane as the climax approaches. But surprisingly, there’s also some genuine emotional depth here. This thanks to themes of acceptance, loss, and teamwork woven into the story. Honestly, I can’t believe I’m saying this, but… when’s Sonic 4 coming out?
