REVIEW SUMMARY
Gavin O'Connor’s The Accountant 2 is a well-calculated buddy action-comedy that ups the ante from its predecessor. Yep, Ben Affleck once again delivers a compelling turn as Christian Wolff, the lethal autistic savant whose calm intensity effortlessly anchors the film. But, it’s the expanded role of Jon Bernthal’s Braxton—Wolff’s volatile and diabolical brother—that truly seals the deal. Bernthal’s unhinged energy perfectly contrasts Affleck’s quiet precision, creating a dynamic duo that’s as entertaining as it is chaotic. The film also leans more into its action roots with bigger set pieces, extended shootouts, and satisfyingly brutal kills. The story, too, grows in scope, packed with twists that keep the audience on their toes. It’s occasionally hard to follow, but the film rewards close attention, breadcrumbing clues along the way. Admittedly, it’s all a bit over-the-top and silly, but the grounded performances keep it from flying off the rails. One caveat: a solid understanding of the first film is essential. There’s little hand-holding here—Wolff’s quirks, backstory, and motivations are carried over without a real recap. And, given that the original dropped nearly a decade ago, that’s asking a lot. Thankfully, The Accountant holds up well on rewatch, and its sequel fits comfortably in the same category: a fun, bullet-riddled ride worth filing under “watch again.”
