REVIEW SUMMARY

The Devil all the Time can perhaps best be summed up as a seemingly unending tangled web of unpleasant circumstances. So, needless to say, this is NOT the feel-good movie of the year. However, there is a lot to like – mainly the performances. Mostly everyone (with maybe the exception of Jason Clarke) is playing against type, and let me tell you, they all do an impeccable job. Tom Holland is especially impressive here, shedding his Spiderman suit for a roughed-up backwoods ensemble as a desperately tormented young man (seriously, it’s characters like this that could use years of therapy). Meanwhile, Sebastian Stan goes nearly unrecognizable in his role as the morally challenged/self-serving sheriff. But perhaps the best of the bunch is Robert Pattinson, who mesmerizes as a ballsy young reverend. And while I can go on and on about the performances, I should probably let you know that the story is a little lacking. Sure, things are heavily layered, with lots of connecting dots throughout, but it all adds up to be rather pointless by the end – not to mention overdrawn. When it’s over, you’ll perhaps want to run to the shower to rinse some of the “filth.” But, this is a film that takes on a lot, takes chances, and sticks to its unrelenting tone (for better or worse). And for that, I can appreciate it! Did I mention the performances though?
